Sutton is a borough of houses, so a domestic cleaner’s weekly visit there is more often a house with a staircase than a flat. Regular cleaning costs £23 an hour if the cleaner comes weekly and £24 an hour if fortnightly.

Sutton counted 82,347 households at the 2021 Census. Semis were the commonest kind of house, home to 27.9%; 24.5% had a terrace and 10.5% a detached house, so houses of one kind or another hold close to two households in three. Flats, mostly purpose-built, made up the other 37.1%. Owners outnumber everyone else here: 64.4% of households, with private tenants at 20.3% and social tenants at 14.2%.

That mix changes what a cleaner does with the hours. A house has a staircase to hoover, a landing, often a downstairs toilet as well as the bathroom and a kitchen that a family uses three times a day. The visit is planned floor by floor, and the products and the vacuum need to be where the cleaner can reach them on both levels.

Semis, terraces and the hours a Sutton house needs

For a two-bedroom terrace, the 3-hour minimum is usually enough when the cleaner comes every week. A three-bedroom semi with a bathroom upstairs and a toilet downstairs tends to need four hours, and a detached house with four bedrooms five or more. A fortnightly visit in the same house generally needs half an hour to an hour more. Your first visit is charged as a trial, £26 an hour; after it you and the cleaner settle what the regular hours should be, and the domestic cleaners page sets out the jobs in each room.

Sutton town’s water does not come from Thames Water. SES Water places SM1 4BG and SM1 3SU in what it calls the Langley Park Sutton zone, fed from its Cheam treatment works alone, and its 2025 figures for that zone give an average calcium level of 82.4 mg/l, the same as 206.0 mg/l of calcium carbonate. Under a statutory duty that dates from the 19th century, SES part-softens its groundwater with a calcium target of 80 mg/l, and more than four in five of its customers receive water treated that way. It still grades this supply as hard. Expect a white film round the taps and on glass shower doors every week, and put a descaling spray in the cupboard alongside the cleaner’s other products.

Visitor vouchers and trader permits for a Sutton cleaner

Only parts of Sutton have parking controls. The four controlled zones are Longfellow Road, Belmont, the town centre and Wellington Avenue with Lingfield Road, plus the Collingwood Estate. Separate permit parking areas cover streets in Worcester Park, Cheam, St Helier, Hackbridge, Carshalton Beeches and Carshalton itself. Fifty free hours of visitor parking a year come with each household inside a zone, and more can be bought 50 or 100 hours at a time; the vouchers went virtual on 1 October 2026.

A trader permit from the council lasts a year but allows two hours at most per stay, short of a 3-hour visit. The council’s open-air car parks, Carshalton High Street and Wallington among them, run from 8am until 10pm and sell a ticket for the whole day. A regular cleaner travelling by bus or walking from the station leaves all of this aside; when the cleaner does pay to park, the charge appears on the bill as paid, up to £40.

Shared houses and moving out in Sutton

Sutton licenses shared homes under two schemes. Houses with five or more occupiers need a mandatory licence, and the borough-wide additional scheme, now past its lead-in and fully running, catches homes where three or more people from different households share. Licences run for up to five years. In a shared house the kitchen, bathroom and stairs are the rooms a cleaner is booked for, and the sharers agree which of them books and pays. A three-bedroom house costs £339 for an end of tenancy clean and a four-bedroom one £425; that team arrives with the equipment and products, and half the price is taken as a deposit when you book.

Domestic cleaning in Belmont

Belmont station was called California when it opened in May 1865, and the Belmont name only arrived in 1875; the village grew up around it, with Station Road as its modest high street. At the 2021 Census, 41.1% of households in Belmont ward lived in purpose-built flats and 21.5% in detached houses, about twice the borough’s rate. Belmont Hospital closed in the 1980s and was knocked down, and the Belmont Heights housing development now fills its site west of Brighton Road. Two neighbours on the same booking day can therefore need very different visits: a flat fits 3 hours, a detached four-bedroom house more like five. Belmont counts among Sutton’s four controlled zones; households within one receive a yearly 50 hours of visitor vouchers free. Cheam treatment works, which SES says serves about 100,000 customers, supplies Belmont too, and domestic cleaning here involves the same weekly fight with limescale in the bathroom.

Domestic cleaning in Carshalton

Carshalton Village became Sutton’s first conservation area in 1968, and the boundary was widened in 1993 and again in 2012, when Westcroft Road was added. The 2019 appraisal points to timber frames clad in white weatherboard as the local signature, best seen along West Street, where some of the red-tiled houses are probably 18th century. Old houses fresh from building work, or ones that have gone a long time between cleaners, start best with a deep clean: a pair of cleaners, three hours as the least, all their own kit, from £198. Weekly domestic cleaning then keeps the house at that level. Parking needs a look at the signs. Several Carshalton streets are permit parking areas where every car needs a permit during set hours, and those hours differ: 11am to 1pm on weekdays in CS1, 9am to 11am and 4pm to 6pm in CA2 around Talbot Road, 10am to noon in CB around Gordon Road in Carshalton Beeches. Three out of four Carshalton households own their home (76.6%).

Domestic cleaning in Cheam

Cheam’s two wards hold different houses. Detached houses hold 37.0% of Cheam ward’s households, while North Cheam is mostly semis (39.5%) and terraces (37.1%). Owner occupation sits near 80% in each. A detached house in Cheam with four bedrooms and two bathrooms is a five-hour visit for one cleaner, and a semi in North Cheam usually four. Busy family kitchens are where a weekly visit runs short of time, and the oven is the usual casualty: from £77 buys a separate oven clean for a single oven, from £110 for a double, done in your kitchen with the racks soaked in a tub. A conservation area has protected Cheam Village from 1970, taking in old parkland, houses of many ages and the mock Tudor shopfronts with leaded lights at the crossroads. SES Water lists Cheam (SM2) in its Nork zone, where the 2025 average was 209.5 mg/l, roughly 14.7 degrees on the Clark scale, so domestic cleaning in Cheam means descaling taps and shower heads as routine.

Domestic cleaning in Sutton

Flats lead in Sutton town, unlike most of the borough. Sutton South ward was 79.7% flats at the last Census, 73.0% in purpose-built blocks, and 43.5% of its households rented privately; Sutton Central was 71.6% flats. Sutton North turns that round, with houses in the majority and owners at 70.4%. A flat in Sutton South or Sutton Central usually fits a 3-hour visit, with an end of tenancy clean when tenants change. Sutton Garden Suburb, an 8.4-hectare conservation area north of the town centre, began as a garden suburb company’s project: Cavendish Pearson designed its 79 houses, begun in 1912 to 1914 and set around small closes on Greenhill, Woodend and Aultone Way. Visitor parking in the town needs care. The Town Centre zone is divided by colour, red, green and blue, and a permit is only good in bays carrying its own letter, R, G or B. South Sutton’s permit area runs for two morning hours, 9am till 11am, Monday to Friday. For a long visit, the Gibson Road multi-storey opens at 6am and sells an all-day ticket. For domestic cleaning in SM1 or SM2, the office confirms your postcode on the call.

Domestic cleaning in Wallington

Wallington is half and half: flats house 49.4% of households across Wallington North and South, and owners make up 62.0%. Just north of the shops, the 3.5-hectare Wallington Green conservation area (1971) has houses of every kind, detached to terraced, beside commercial, light industrial and leisure uses. Newer homes are arriving too. The council’s first Passivhaus homes went up on the former Gower House site at 75 Woodcote Road and were finished in October 2024: eleven flats, nine with two bedrooms, let to households on the council’s waiting list. A two-bedroom flat like those fits a fortnightly 3-hour visit at £24 an hour; a terraced house on two floors usually wants four. Streets in permit area HB2, in Wallington North, are permit-only for every car from 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. Painted bays are generally absent inside such an area, and the entry sign carries the hours. Tell the office about HB2 before a cleaner who drives arrives for domestic cleaning there.

Domestic cleaning in Worcester Park

Fields covered most of Worcester Park until the railway station brought the builders. The bulk of its housing went up between the wars, and the southern end came later, in the 1960s, after the brick works there shut. Owners make up 85.5% of households in Worcester Park South ward, with 46.2% of households in a semi; Worcester Park North is 41.1% terraced. For houses like these, regular domestic cleaning is usually a weekly four-hour visit, with the bedrooms, stairs and landing on one floor and the kitchen and living room on the other. If the bedrooms are carpeted, carpet cleaning is booked separately, £36 per bedroom and £41 per flight on a visit of at least £67, using portable hot water extraction machines. SES Water lists Worcester Park (KT4) in its North Looe zone, supplied from Cheam; its 2025 average of 205 mg/l works out at about 14.4 Clark degrees. No full controlled zone covers Worcester Park, though on some streets permit parking applies, with the times posted where you drive in.

Questions about domestic cleaning in Sutton

Which Sutton parking permits cover a cleaner who drives?

A household in a Sutton controlled zone has 50 hours of free visitor vouchers each year and can top up in blocks of 50 or 100 hours; ask the council whether they suit a cleaner’s visit. The council also sells a trader permit to traders working in residents’ homes, usable for up to two hours at once in permit-area, resident and shared-use bays, so it falls short of a 3-hour visit. A cleaner who comes by bus or on foot needs neither, and parking a cleaner does pay for goes on your bill at the price paid, with £40 as the limit.

Is Sutton’s water hard enough to need a limescale product?

Yes. SES Water part-softens much of what it supplies, yet the zone averages for the postcodes checked in Sutton, Cheam, Carshalton, Wallington and Worcester Park all sat between about 205 and 210 mg/l as calcium carbonate in 2025, a level SES itself calls hard. Leave a descaler with the other cleaning products; for regular cleaning in Sutton the household supplies everything the cleaner uses.

Is a regular cleaner available everywhere in Sutton?

Not in every postcode. Sutton’s SM, KT and CR postcodes cover a wide area, and the office tells you on the phone whether a weekly or fortnightly cleaner can reach you. Where one can, you pay the cleaner on the day or settle a monthly invoice. Allow four weeks for you and the cleaner to settle in; from then on, 14 days’ notice from either side ends the arrangement.
