Domestic cleaners in Wandsworth work mainly in flats, and about a quarter of those flats sit inside converted houses. A weekly visit is £23 an hour for 3 hours or longer, using the vacuum and products you keep at home.

Wandsworth had 137,392 households at the 2021 Census, and two thirds of them (68.5%) lived in a flat. Split that further and 48.1% of the borough’s households were in blocks built as flats, 17.7% in former houses now divided. Of the rest, terraces took 22.2%, with semis (7.0%) and detached homes (2.2%) a small minority. More households owned (42.5%) than rented privately (36.3%); 19.3% were social tenants and 1.8% shared owners.

Three kinds of flat come up on a cleaner’s list here: a floor of a Victorian or Edwardian house, a flat in a mansion block and a flat in one of the newer riverside blocks. Each needs a different note in the booking. Wandsworth also has 46 conservation areas, from one-street areas such as Deodar Road up to large ones like West Putney and the Alton Estate, a big stretch of 20th century council housing.

Converted flats, mansion blocks and the hours they take

A one-bedroom flat on one floor of a converted house fits the 3-hour minimum each week. A two-bedroom mansion flat with a separate kitchen takes 3 to four, and a terraced family house with three bedrooms and two bathrooms four to five. Book fortnightly at £24 an hour and the same home usually needs a little longer per visit. We charge the opening visit as a trial, £26 an hour, and you can change the hours afterwards if they were too few or too many. A full list of what gets done in each room sits on our domestic cleaners page.

You keep the equipment and products; the cleaner brings none for a regular visit. Water hardness is worth planning for. Average readings in Thames Water’s 2025 reports for the Wandsworth postcodes checked run from 252 (Putney Heath zone) to 268 mg/l (Balham zone), all of it hard water, and in the Balham zone one of four samples reached 326 mg/l, above 300, which Thames Water rates very hard. Put a limescale spray beside the bathroom cleaner.

Visitor permits and trade permits in Wandsworth

Only residents can get Wandsworth visitor permits, as paperless permits or scratch cards, and each one works only in the zone printed on it. They cannot be used on an estate, on a private road or in a car park. Anyone holding a resident parking permit also receives ten one-hour visitor permits a year at no charge, for use in zones with a single controlled hour. Trade permits are sold by the day or as a five-day card, each for one vehicle in one sub-zone, and are no good in bays marked pay and display only, in car parks or on estates. Newer blocks are a particular snag: the council notes that many recent developments sit outside the CPZ, so their residents may not be able to get on-street permits. Pay and display hours and maximum stays are set street by street. A cleaner arriving by bus or train skips all of this; if the cleaner pays for a bay, you pay that amount back, never more than £40.

Licensed lets and moving out in Wandsworth

Wandsworth licenses rented homes in two ways. Additional HMO licensing has covered the whole borough from 1 July 2025 and lasts until 30 June 2030; it reaches shared homes that mandatory licensing misses, including a shared flat in a purpose-built block with three or more flats. The selective scheme, which applies to any private let, started on 1 July 2025 in four wards (South Balham, Furzedown, Tooting Broadway and Tooting Bec) and spread on 1 April 2026 to Northcote, East Putney and West Putney for five years. Every other ward has no selective scheme. Moving out is a job for the end of tenancy cleaning team, which brings the equipment and products and prices by bedrooms, £156 for a studio and rising to £425 for four, with a 50% deposit to fix the date.

Domestic cleaning in Balham

Studios to four-bedroom penthouses, 676 flats in all: that is Du Cane Court, the Art Deco block on Balham High Road that was Europe’s largest block of privately occupied flats when it opened in the 1930s. A studio there is a short 3-hour visit. On the Tooting Bec Common side of Balham, the Heaver Estate conservation area has red brick houses and flats that Alfred Heaver built in a Queen Anne style from about 1890 to 1910, with carved brickwork, small-paned windows, tiled paths and cast iron gates. Small panes mean a lot of window frame to wipe. Where the weekly visit runs out of time before the oven, book an oven clean separately: from £77 for a single oven, or from £117 with the hob and extractor done too. Parking takes planning. For most of its length Balham High Road is a red route, and some of the flat blocks on it are excluded from the CPZ, so their residents may not be able to get visitor permits. Balham Station Road (SW12 9AY) sits in Thames Water’s Balham zone, where one 2025 sample went over 300 mg/l, so domestic cleaning there always includes descaling.

Domestic cleaning in Battersea

Overstrand Mansions starts the line of seven late Victorian mansion blocks along Prince of Wales Drive, about five storeys high and all finished by 1902, facing the Grade II* registered Battersea Park. An upper-floor mansion flat can mean several flights to climb, so keep the vacuum in the flat. Two-bedroom mansion flats usually take 3 to four hours a week, and ironing can join the weekly visit as added time, with the price agreed by phone. A very different home stands on the Shaftesbury Park Estate, put up in 1873 to 1877: stock brick houses of two storeys with Gothic touches, mostly run by Peabody today, where an Article 4 direction controls changes to windows, doors and outside paint. One of those is a 3-hour weekly job. None of the three Battersea wards, Battersea Park, St Mary’s and Shaftesbury & Queenstown, is in a selective designation, although shared homes still need an HMO licence. For domestic cleaning by car, note that most of Battersea Park Road is a red route; in zone B, the Prince of Wales Drive bays and some Battersea Park Road bays apply seven days a week, 9am to 8pm, four hours at most.

Domestic cleaning in Clapham Junction

The three wards around Clapham Junction are not alike. Falconbrook, where the station is, is 86.3% flats and 45.1% social rented. In Lavender, 43.3% of households live in flats within converted houses and 46.6% rent from a private landlord. If yours is a flat-share there, three sharers with one kitchen and one bathroom, the cleaner spends most of the visit in those two rooms. Northcote, lying between the two commons, has more terraced houses than any other ward in Wandsworth, 49.3% of households, and in a family house a weekly visit runs four hours or more. Selective licensing reached Northcote on 1 April 2026 but not Lavender or Falconbrook. On the Winstanley and York Road estates, regeneration has produced 265 new homes so far, 172 let at council rent, with around 2,500 planned in the end. Around St John’s Road the conservation area keeps three and four storey shopping terraces with Victorian houses in the side streets. Domestic cleaning in a flat-share works best when one sharer handles the booking and the payment.

Domestic cleaning in Earlsfield

Earlsfield’s Victorian terraces followed the station, which opened on Garratt Lane in April 1884, and the small high street is bounded by Garratt Lane, Allfarthing Lane and Burntwood Lane. Terraced houses hold 27.0% of households in its two wards, and flats in converted houses another 21.8%. Across on the Wandsworth Common side, SW18’s Toast Rack streets are a different scale: big Victorian houses, detached or in pairs. A house there with four or five bedrooms is a five-hour weekly visit or two cleaners on a deep clean before the regular visits begin. Stairs, landings and bedroom carpets take the wear in a big family house, and carpet cleaning is booked as its own visit at £36 a bedroom, on a visit of at least £67, with hot water extraction machines carried in room by room. Wandsworth Common and Wandle wards are both outside selective licensing. Thames Water places SW18 3NY, at the station end of Magdalen Road, in its Tooting zone and SW18 3DD on Earlsfield Road in its Clapham zone, both averaging 255 mg/l in 2025, so put a descaler on the list.

Domestic cleaning in Nine Elms

Nine Elms is almost entirely flats: 98.5% of households, 97.6% in purpose-built blocks, with 58.4% renting privately and 7.6% in shared ownership in 2021. Riverside developments there, Chelsea Bridge Wharf and Embassy Gardens among them, are planned for up to 1,982 homes, and Battersea Power Station reopened in October 2022 with 254 flats inside the converted building and new blocks by Frank Gehry and Foster + Partners around it. Two big council estates, the Savona and Carey Gardens, are here too. Tenants moving out of a two-bedroom flat pay £243 for the fixed-price move-out clean. New developments are frequently outside the CPZ, the council says, so a resident of a new block may have no visitor permits to give; check before a team arrives by car. Part of the area, Nine Elms tube station among it, lies over the border in Lambeth. Domestic cleaning in a new block starts at the concierge desk if there is one, so register the cleaner there.

Domestic cleaning in Putney

Putney’s riverside has its own access quirks. On Putney Embankment the garden walls are also the flood defence. At Ruvigny Mansions you go up to raised front doors behind a rendered wall, and the houses on the corner of Festing Road, which sit at street level, have a flood wall of brick and concrete in front of them. A team carrying a vacuum, a mop bucket and product boxes up raised steps needs a few extra minutes. Inland, the West Putney conservation area starts among Georgian and Victorian streets close to the town and runs out into an Edwardian suburb on former fields, which the council divides into six character areas. If a house there has had no cleaner for months, a deep clean from £198 gets it ready for weekly visits. East Putney and West Putney wards came into selective licensing on 1 April 2026; Thamesfield, around the town centre and riverside, stayed outside. The Putney High Street and Embankment postcodes checked fall in Thames Water’s Barnes zone, which averaged 260 mg/l in 2025. 48.4% of Putney households own their home, and domestic cleaning for a family house there tends to run four hours or more.

Domestic cleaning in Southfields

The Southfields Grid is a set of parallel streets the London County Council approved two days before Christmas 1891. By mid-1906 it was essentially finished, its 1,766 units made up of houses, maisonettes and shops. In a maisonette, tell the cleaner whether yours is the upper or the lower door. The Wimbledon Park Road conservation area is a private estate of near-identical terraces put up from 1910 to 1920 by Allen and Norris, covering that road plus Gatwick, Hambledon and Wincanton Roads. The houses are red brick with gables to the street, tile-hung square bays and deep porches held up by polished granite columns. A three-bedroom terrace there settles into a fortnightly visit of four hours at £24 an hour. Southfields and West Hill wards are outside both selective designations, but shared homes still need an HMO licence. Thames Water puts SW18 5RJ by Southfields station and SW19 6LA in West Hill ward in its Putney Heath zone, which had the lowest average of the Wandsworth postcodes checked, 252 mg/l, though that is still hard. For domestic cleaning anywhere in the Grid, say on the call which door is yours and how many floors the home has.

Domestic cleaning in Tooting

Franciscan Road and Lessingham Avenue belong to Totterdown Fields, the first cottage estate the London County Council ever built: 1,261 cottages, mostly two storeys of yellow stock brick, spread over 38 acres between 1901 and 1911. Some were divided so that one household has the ground floor and another the floor above, and a flat like that is often a 3-hour visit even fortnightly. Tooting has plenty of tenants: 40.9% of households rent privately and 21.5% live in flats in converted houses. Tooting Bec and Tooting Broadway wards have needed selective licences since 1 July 2025, while Trinity ward, which holds Tooting Bec station, does not. If you share a cottage flat, agree with the others who pays the cleaner and where the products live. In the Mellison Road conservation area a small group of houses wear a facing of knapped flint, and their boundary walls are flint too, which the council describes as found nowhere else in the borough. Along Tooting High Street, a red route, the E1 and E2 bays apply from 9.30am to 5.30pm on every day but Sunday, for up to four hours, and any parking for domestic cleaning by car is passed on at the price paid, £40 at most.

Domestic cleaning in Wandsworth Town

Wandsworth Town is one of the oldest settlements in the borough. Brewing shaped it, and the conservation area still shows that in its pubs and small workers’ cottages, with bigger merchants’ villas round the edges. The listed Ram Brewery buildings (Grade II*) stand on a site now redeveloped, and former industrial land north and south of the centre, the old gasworks and the Wandle Delta among it, is being rebuilt as well. Near the station, the Old York Road conservation area, designated in June 2019, is mainly compact terraced houses from the late 1870s to the 1890s, packed close together around the Tonsleys. A two-bedroom cottage there fits 3 hours a week. With 77.0% of households in flats and 38.8% renting privately, the move-out clean is the other booking to know about. Courthouse Way and the Southside centre come back in Thames Water’s Wandsworth Wandle zone, mean 265 mg/l for 2025, so domestic cleaning there should include limescale every week.

Questions about domestic cleaning in Wandsworth

Can a cleaner use a Wandsworth visitor permit on a housing estate or in a new block?

No. Wandsworth visitor permits work only on street and only in the zone named on them; car parks, private roads and housing estates are excluded. Many new developments are excluded from the CPZ, so residents there may not get permits at all. A cleaner who comes on foot or by public transport avoids the question; otherwise parking is charged at cost, capped at £40.

Is a regular cleaner available in SW11, SW12, SW15, SW17 and SW18?

Not in every postcode. Ring the office with your postcode and it will tell you if a weekly or fortnightly cleaner can come on your day; where it can, it keeps you with one cleaner. One-off, deep and end of tenancy teams cover the whole of Wandsworth.

How do payment and notice work for regular cleaning in Wandsworth?

There is no deposit. Pay the cleaner after each visit, or have the office invoice you once a month. The first visit is a trial at £26 an hour and the first four weeks are a settling-in period; after that, 14 days’ notice from either side ends it. Call off a visit later than two working days before it and half the price is due.
