Domestic cleaning in Richmond upon Thames means one cleaner on a fixed day, at £23 an hour if the visits are weekly or £24 if they are fortnightly, booked for at least 3 hours and working with your own products and equipment.

Old houses are a large part of Richmond upon Thames. The Valuation Office Agency counts 37.8% of the borough’s homes as pre-1919, and just 8.4% are from the year 2000 onwards. Eighty-five conservation areas cover parts of the borough, and a home inside one may need planning permission for changes that would be allowed elsewhere. For the cleaning itself the stairs matter more. Roughly six households in ten have a whole house to themselves, whether terraced, semi-detached or detached, and 62.4% are owner-occupiers.

Period houses and the weekly visit in Richmond upon Thames

Plan on four hours for a three-bedroom Victorian or Edwardian semi, and five or six for a big detached house. One or two bedrooms in a flat is the 3-hour minimum. Every regular domestic cleaner uses the household’s own kit, so set the vacuum, mop, bucket and cloths out in one place with the products you like. If an old wooden floor or any other surface needs a particular product, leave it out and tell the cleaner which goes where. Thames Water is the supplier throughout, and its Richmond zone gave a 2025 mean of 263 mg/l, which sits in its hard band; a limescale remover saves time on taps and shower glass. The trial visit that starts things off costs £26 an hour. Settle each visit with the cleaner in person, or the office sends a single bill each month. Once the four-week settling-in spell is over, giving 14 days’ notice ends the arrangement on either side.

Controlled zones and visitor permits in Richmond upon Thames

The council’s zone list gives every controlled zone its own hours and its own bay types, and several zones are enforced for just two hours on weekday mornings. Residents of a zone can buy visitor permits two ways, scratchcards sold ten to a pack or pay-as-you-go sessions booked ahead, and trader permits are sold to residents at the same prices. Car parks and pay and display bays accept neither kind. Some zones are free on bank holidays, though that concession stops at the bays themselves, and yellow lines and trader bays are still enforced. Paid bays use RingGo. If the cleaner drives and pays to park, that sum goes on your bill unchanged, never over £40. Coming by train or bus, a cleaner needs no parking at all.

Domestic cleaning in Barnes

Within a few streets of Barnes Green the housing changes completely. Victorian mansion blocks rise four storeys; nearby are two-storey villas, and tucked around Limes Avenue, The Maltings and Cleveland Road are small cottages built for Victorian workers, while on Grange Road the Edwardian semis have three storeys. A cottage is a 3-hour weekly visit; a three-storey semi is nearer five. Castelnau dates from after the opening of the toll bridge at Hammersmith: twenty pairs of classical villas came first, then big Victorian houses and some tall Edwardian flats. Today’s Hammersmith Bridge, the 1887 suspension bridge, shut fully in 2020, and since April 2025 its main deck has been open again to walkers, cyclists, wheelchair users and e-scooters, which suits a cleaner coming on foot from the Hammersmith side. In the bulk of the B1 zone, enforcement is a weekday matter between 10am and noon. Sofas and armchairs in daily use are a separate job, and an upholstery clean is £33 for an armchair, on a visit of at least £67. Thames Water put 16 of the 18 SW13 postcodes it sampled in its Barnes zone, mean 260 mg/l in 2025, so domestic cleaners there meet limescale every week.

Domestic cleaning in East Sheen

East Sheen is owner-occupied (70.9%) and mostly houses, with semis at 28.1% of households and detached houses at 11.4%. It has three conservation areas. Christchurch Road is the old core, running from Percy Lodge, built in 1740, through the large villas that followed Mortlake station in 1846 to Christ Church of 1864 and Robert Atkinson’s Mall estate of 1924. East Sheen Avenue has broad Edwardian semis of two storeys on generous plots, and Sheen Common Drive has detached houses put up between 1925 and 1932. A big Edwardian semi needs four or five hours of domestic cleaning each week. Shirts can be part of the visit too: ironing goes on as extra time, with the price given when you ring. Zones ES and ES1 (Parkside) apply on weekdays from 10am until noon only, so their listed hours are over by midday, though the street signs decide, and in those two zones a single visitor scratchcard is good for a full day.

Domestic cleaning in Hampton

Hampton has the fewest flats of any area on this page, and they house just over a quarter of households in its two wards, while semis account for 28.9%, terraces 26.6% and detached houses 16.7%. Private renting is low, at 16.9%. In the Hampton Village conservation area the old streets (Thames Street, High Street, Church Street) hide many listed buildings behind tall walls, and the area reaches the waterworks and the boatyards and slipways on the river. With a garden outside, mud gets walked through the hall and onto the staircase, and a hot water extraction carpet clean is £41 for a flight or £43 for a living room, on a visit of at least £67. By Hampton Court, zone H runs seven days a week and on bank holidays: shared pay and display bays until 6.30pm, shared permit bays until 8pm. No zone on the council’s list carries the name of Hampton village. Budget about five hours a week of domestic cleaning for a four-bedroom house.

Domestic cleaning in Kew

Kew Green, beside the Thames, is lined mainly with good 18th century buildings. The railway added the Priory estate for commuters, and when the conservation area was extended it took in the Victorian terraces along Kew Road plus two-storey semis and terraces from the Victorian and Edwardian years. Lawn Crescent, just off Sandycombe Road, is different again: it was laid out about 1900 with twenty pairs of semis, red brick, set round a green, rising two and a half storeys to steep slate mansards with dormers and joined by timber balconies. That half storey is a room under the roof, and the weekly clean begins there and finishes on the ground floor. Ovens are a separate booking: an oven clean on a single oven is from £77, with the parts soaked in a tub in your kitchen. On most roads in zone KA the controls last two hours on a weekday morning, while North Kew (KC) runs daily from 10am until 4.30pm and late into the evening on big event days. Thames Water puts TW9 3AB, in Kew ward, in its Richmond zone, mean 263 mg/l, so domestic cleaners there face hard water as well.

Domestic cleaning in Richmond

Renting is more common in central Richmond: 31.7% of households in North and South Richmond wards are private tenants, against 24.7% overall, and half the households live in flats, with 14.5% of all households in converted or shared houses. Facing Richmond Green from the south-east are brick townhouses of the late 1600s and early 1700s, many with a front basement area behind railings and steps rising straight from the pavement. If your flat is one of those basements, tell the office, so the cleaner knows which door to use. Along the river from the bridge down to the lock, the houses are Georgian or 19th century, and some terraces have boathouses tucked beneath them. Tenants leaving a two-bedroom flat pay £243 for an end of tenancy clean; the team brings its own equipment, and a 50% deposit confirms the booking. Zone A1 is enforced six days a week from 8.30am, finishing at 6.30pm, and the Richmond Green resident bays every day until midnight, so the train or bus is the easier way in for a domestic cleaner.

Domestic cleaning in Teddington

Teddington leans towards flats, which house 48.9% of its households, most of them in blocks built for the purpose; 62.9% of households own. A purpose-built flat with one or two bedrooms usually needs only the 3-hour minimum, and every other week at £24 an hour works for a couple who are out at work all week. The High Street has kept an unusual number of its original shopfronts: older two-storey brick on the north side, taller Edwardian parades opposite. By the river, the weir and lock go back to 1812 and the footbridge to 1888, and the old boathouses now stand beside recent flats. Zone T, the main one, is enforced only from 8.30am until 10.30am on weekdays, Cedar Road, Christchurch Avenue and a handful of other roads aside, so on most streets its listed hours are over by 10.30am, though the signs decide. Thames Water placed 17 of the 18 TW11 postcodes it sampled in its Teddington zone, mean 254 mg/l in 2025, among the softer figures in the borough.

Domestic cleaning in Twickenham

The riverside part of Twickenham grew from a medieval village centred on St Mary’s church, and its Georgian and early Victorian streets still have narrow alleyways between them, with 18th century villas on the river and red brick Edwardian houses at Lebanon Park sloping down to the water. Twickenham Green is ringed with Victorian villas, Apsley Villas among them, stuccoed in the 1840s. A four-bedroom villa suits four or five hours a week, and if it has gone months without help, start with a deep clean, from £198, so the first weekly visit is not spent on old grime. Big match days change the parking. On stadium days with big crowds (around 25,000 and up), a one-day Event Zone (R) applies from 11am to 11pm, and roads near the ground such as Whitton Road and Rugby Road can be closed for an hour and a half or two on each side of the match. On normal days zone D in the centre covers Monday to Saturday until 6.30pm, while South Twickenham’s zone E mostly applies for two early hours on weekday mornings. If your domestic cleaner drives, a match day is one to avoid.

Questions about domestic cleaning in Richmond upon Thames

Can I give my cleaner a Richmond visitor permit?

Residents in a Richmond zone can buy visitor permits, as scratchcards or pay-as-you-go sessions, plus trader permits for a person doing work at the property; car parks and pay and display bays take neither. Ask the council which suits a cleaner’s visit. If the cleaner drives and pays for a bay, you see that cost on the bill as it was charged, capped at £40.

Does a Richmond upon Thames landlord need a licence?

The council’s landlord pages describe only the national mandatory HMO licence, which applies once a home has at least five occupiers belonging to two or more households, and no selective or additional scheme. Richmond takes the fee for a standard HMO licence in two stages, the first on application and the second on grant.

Is a regular cleaner available in every Richmond upon Thames postcode?

The borough stretches from SW13 and SW14 across to TW12, and some of those postcodes have no regular cleaner free. Ring the office with yours and it will tell you before any trial visit is booked.
